The promotion of Romanian food products on foreign markets, but also of the innovative products are on the list of the 2012 priorities of the National Export Strategy, which was drawn up by the specialist directorates in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and the Business Environment (MECMA).

"We have established in the 2012-2016 National Export Strategy and in the one that was drawn up by zones that 2012 will be the year of promoting Romanian food products and creatively innovative products with high added value. On the basis of this strategy we have made a plan for taking part in Alimentaria 2012 together with the Romanian Centre for Promoting Trade and Foreign Investments [CRPCIS] and with the partners in the business environment. It is Romania's most important participation so far, both as number of companies and as area," deputy managing director of the MECMA Directorate General Trade and International Relations Cristian Cutas told Agerpres.

He made it clear that the dynamics of the fair was twice as much in 2012 from the 2008 and 2010 previous editions of Alimentaria, which Romania also attended and where it had a national pavilion. "Even if we are at a time when many European Union countries are hampered by this economic crisis, one can see the interest taken in this kind of food both by experts and by the public at large. At the end of every promotion action and at the end of this exhibition, we are going to centralize the number of contracts we have signed, the number of new partners as well as the estimated value of the contracts planned for export," said Cutas.

In his opinion, Spain is an attractive market for exports to be made by Romanian producers as they can offer their own products not only to the Romanians living in Spain, but also to distributors. "From the discussions with the partners in the private sector, with the representatives of Romalimenta, one can infer that Spain is a good market for the Romanian companies as their interest goes to two aspects. The first one is connected with the large communities of Romanians who opened shops to commercialize these products and the second target would be for the big distributors, who have been increasingly interested in Romanian products of late," said the MECMA managing director.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) approval is improving the risk rating on investing in Romanian sovereign debt and should woo back investors, according to French banking group BNP Parisbas, quoted by Bloomberg.

Last week, the IMF cleared the release of the next tranche of funds following an IMF mission to review Romania’s stand by agreement. The IMF also released a statement declaring that the leu, Romania’s currency, was slightly undervalued. “The IMF’s comments about the undervaluation of the leu were particularly helpful in restoring confidence in leu assets,” said BNP analyst Bartosz Pawlowski, quoted by Bloomberg.

According to the Bloomberg article, the IMF’s approval has pepped up confidence in Romania, which has been severely hit in recent months by the ongoing political crisis. The leu has recorded numerous lows, which according to commentators were a reaction to the political situation in the country, where the president is still suspended, even after the presidential impeachment referendum.
